You can see what a silly argument this is, right? It’s their lives, what business does the state or do the rest of us have to limit their lifestyles?
But this is the exact same argument we see below with respect to global warming – - “are commuters too selfish to change their lifestyles?”
It’s not selfish to want to live your life the way you want without the government telling you what to do!!!!
The only basis for the government to get involved is if your lifestyle is causing some alleged harm – but there has to be a burden of proof, you can’t just SAY it causes it, get a bunch of OTHER people to SAY it causes it, no matter how smart they are – you have to SHOW it.
You haven’t done that on man-made global warming.
Until you do, keep your carbon taxes and you know where to stick them!

99%???? REALLY??? 99%???? last i heard, 17,000 scientists signed the IPCC study…that would mean that there are 17171 scientists in the world, and only 171 don’t buy it. and yet, i know of about 16,000 who will openly refute (and have openly refuted) the IPCC study on human effects of global warming. are the not “Real” scientists, simply because they have their own, non-politicized agendas???
also, about 700 years ago, 99% of scientists thought the world was flat. oh, and that we are at the center of the solar system.
disappointed in you, Sappho. you are about to graduate college, and yet you are completely sucked in by everything you are told, rather tahn forming your own opinions…thats too bad. you missed out on what college is all about. you form you opinions because “Other people said so”. do a little “Free thinking”.
and check on your “Proof” again…maybe ask a geologist or three…the fundamental premise of temps. rising as a result of increased CO2 (its actually reversed) is flawed.

In America, most of this proof has been stifled in the name of government and corporate interests. If the education system were better and students were taught more about the consequences of their lifestyles, attitudes would be very different.
In most of Europe, most people do not drive. They know the consequences of their actions and laws have been enacted to prevent too much carbon emissions. Some countries are even switching over to not using oil at all. America is one of the only countries which refuses to change its ways.
There is a theory called the Tragedy of the Commons which applies here. It points out that with any common resource, ultimately the individual will be too selfish and it will be overused until it is destroyed. This happened with fisheries in the Atlantic ocean, where cod fish were almost completely wiped out by fisherman who kept catching more than could be replaced. It is also happening with air pollution, because people are more interested in the convenience of their vehicles than the quality of the air for everyone around them.
